Cypress Knees
By Joseph D’Antoni
Bent protrusions rise in solum praise
Encircle the base of the mother tree.
Myths say the knees come from long past giants
who died where they fought or just shear fright.
Parts of their bodies long since gone.
Encircled spaces where new are born.
Haunting voices and ugly deeds buried
long forgotten memories linger in mud.
Fossilized knees lay where they bent
slowly disappearing under watery graves.
Branches unfoiled flighted feathers can rest
guideposts for creatures who scramble and slither.
Alligator mothers on egg patrol
Nutria mothers hurried with pups in tow
Night gathers around in gentle fog
To moisten skin of weathered frogs.

Guarding harbors protecting young fish.
Stands of grey moss swing in breezily bliss.
Withstanding cruel winds from hurricanes past
Now quiet reflections of shadows cast.
Haunting sounds from deep in the night
lovers calls sweeten reptile ears.
Long legged herons pratol jagged edges.
Small swamp fish scramble in fear.
Nutria swim quickly with bated breath
Guiding pups away from sudden death.
When the air is quiet and all is calm
Huddle quietly among majestic arms
